Day 2 Ljubljana – Idrija, Mercury Mine (bobbin lace)

Idrija sits snugly in a deep basin at the confluence of the Idrijca and Nikova Rivers surrounded by the hills of Idrija and Cerkno. The secon doldest mercury mine in the world opened here in 1500. We’llwalk through the Anthony Shaft where miners toiled for almost five centuries to give you a brief feel for what the working conditions were like for the miners of “live silver”. Ladies will enjoy a visit to the bobbin lace exhibit for which the women of Idrija are famous. Idrija is also well known for »zlikrofi«, which you will taste for lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon we visit the Franja Guerilla Hospital hidden in a canyon, a lasting memorial to humanism, courage and self-sacrifice. Then on to one of the oldest settlements in Slovenia, Skofja Loka and “Bishop’s Field”. Today the old town is protected as an historical and cultural monument. Gorenjsko-style dinner tonight in a local country inn. Overnight in Ljubljana (B, L, D,)

Day 3 Ljubljana - Vrsic Pass - Soca Valley - Brda - Nova Gorica

A day amid majestic alpine scenery of Triglav National Park. Across Vrsic Pass (5,252 ft) to the valley of the Soca River, one of the few clean rivers in Europe. The Soca Valley is where fresh Alpine winds meet warm Mediterranean influences. You will pass the site of great World War I battles along the green mountain valley to the vineyards, in the Brda hills, lush with peach and cherry trees. Brda is a unique pearl among Slovenian wine regions. Enjoy wine tasting with snacks in a local private winery before dinner in your hotel in Nova Gorica.  After dinner, some gaming in  the Casino. (B, L, D,)

Day 4 N. Gorica - Kras - Skocjan Caves - Portoroz

Today you will experience the beauty and fruits of the Karst. The Karst region is a small limestone plateau stretching south of Nova Gorica to the Skocjan Caves in the Southeast.  The Karst is where the sharp north-westerly winds called burja and warm southerly winds from the sea shape this country of rock and evergreens. At our lunch stop in a local country inn, you will try the fruits of the karst - ruby-red wine called Teran and air-dried ham called prsut with its distinctive taste.  For many travellers, our visit to the Skocjan Caves this afternoon will be a highlight of their trip to Slovenia. UNESCO included the caves and surrounding nature reserve in its list of the World’s Natural Heritage.Dinner and overnight in Portoroz, the well-known Slovenian sea resort. The Port of Roses is a solid strip of hotels, restaurants, shops, discos and sandy beaches. (B, L, D,)

Day 5 Portoroz

A day on your own to use the beach, shop or opt for an excursion to Venice or visit the nearby Secovlje a regional park and nature reserve. In the center is the wonderful Salt Works Museum. The museum staff makes use of salt pans and other traditional tools to produce about 180 tonnes of salt every year in the traditional way of our ancestors.
On the way you will stop in picturesque Piran situated on a narrow peninsula. A gem of Venetian Gothic architecture with narrow little streets is a favourite town on the Slovenian coast. It is one of the best-preserved historical towns on the Adriatic and is entirely protected as a cultural heritage. (B, D,)

Day 6 Portoroz

Day at your own pace, use the beach, shop or opt for an excursion.(B,)

Day 7 Portoroz – Cerknica Lake - Ljubljana – Brnik AP

Inner Carniola, as Notranjsko is called, is the most typical Dinaric region in Slovenia but its karst is different from that of Primorska. Abundant rain and snow fall here but the ground is like a great slab of Gruyere cheese. This morning your first stop will be at one of the most unusual natural phenomena, the “intermittent” Lake Cerknica. This periodic lake has baffled people since ancient times and it wasn’t until the 17 century that it was fully understood how the water system worked.
