In the world of globalisation and standardisation of wines Portugalstays one of few that still persist in its particularity and independence.

In the world of globalisation and standardisation of wines Portugalstays one of few that still persist in its particularity and independence. The Portuguese persistently fight against international sorts of vine and are faithful to their 2000 years long tradition which allowed them to develop their original sorts of vine and particular style of wines. Winegrowing was blooming here for centuries as wine was exported already in the 14th century. Even though the country is small it is the 6th biggest wine producing country in the world. Today the wine industry employs 25 % of the population in the countryside. High quality red and white wines were for centuries under the shadow of the famous Porto wine. Which is unfair, since they deserve their recognition and are becoming better and better with the introduction of modern wine producing methods. Discover the secrets of Portuguese wines on the Spring Wine Tour of the Slovenian Club of wine enthusiasts of sparkling wine (KLP).

The town developed in the golden era of Portugal, between the 14th and 16th century. After a short stop to visit the town follows an other wine cellar at Herdade dos Coelheiros. Among roaming deer and plantations of cork trees we will taste exclusive Portugal wine Tapada dos Coelheiros. Overnight in Lisbon.

Here we will also visit the 15th century gothic monastery before driving to the world famous wine area Douro. The place for wine pilgrimages. The land here is watered by the river Douro (Gods river), which flows into the Atlantic in the port city Porto. The area is full of picturesque terraces with vineyards known for its Porto grape and wine. Short visit to the interesting sites of Porto before checking in the hotel. Free evening to explore the night life and charms of the town.

May, 02 – PORTO

The day will be dedicated to the Porto wine. In the morning we will visit the Ramos Pinto cellar and museum. The cellar was established by Adriano Ramos Pinto in the year 1880. He quickly conquered the South American market and then Europe. Today it is the leading cellar of the area, known also for its excellent sparkling wine “Cristal Champagne”. Next stop will be the Grahams Wine Cellars, where we will taste some Porto wine and enjoy the splendid view over the countryside and the city of Porto. Lunch at Presuntaria Transmontana, where you will be able to taste some local tapas. In the afternoon we will visit Porto’s historical sites: the “Palacio da Borsa” (another UNESCO protected monument) and the church of st. Francis (the most beautiful baroque church in Portugal). The rest of the day free for shopping and dinning in the city.
