Iceland is the home of the Miss World 2006 pageant. The land of fire and ice. Volcanic Island is the place  where the Eurasian and American continental plates meet, with a tremendous icecap and several glaciers, spouting geysers and steaming solfataras, volcanoes (hopefully dormant), raging rivers and magnificent waterfalls, a multitude of birds, cavorting whales just offshore and many other surprises.  Then there’s  modern Reykjavik and the wilderness of the midnight sun.  July is the best time to visit. It is the moment when the ice grip loosens and the day is 24 hours long.

1. Day - Wednesday July 5

This is going to be an overnight flight from Boston to Reykjavik. In the morning we start driving to the south-west point of Iceland at his edge of the Reykjanes peninsula. Reykjanes Ridge, the meeting place of the Eurasian and American continental plates. It is  teeming with a wealth of bird and marine life whose habitats lie amid some of Iceland’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Next is a stop at the natural thermal area that was harnessed for the heating of greenhouses and dwellings. Nowhere else in the country are there more greenhouses in one place than in Hveragerdi. We pass the Kerið Crater and then on to Gullfoss and Geysir. There we will see the powerful waterfall and the blowing springs. Later, after visiting the cathedral in Skalholt, we end at a  hotel in the countryside for dinner and overnight.

2- Day - Thursday July 6

After breakfast we travel north to the Thorsárdalur Valley to visit picturesque waterfalls and beautiful rock formations. After awhile the vegetation disappears and only the black ash from Hekla Mountain takes over. In the ashes was the  medieval form of Stöng buried in the eruption in 1104. Now the ruin has been dug out and we can see how people lived in  those days. In the valley is the giant Þjórsá River (Thorsa). With the biggest Power Station in Iceland, the nearby area is dominated by lava fields, sand and the colorful rhyolite mountain. At Landmannalaugar are natural hot water springs  we have an opportunity to go bathing. We will end the day with a grill party before returning to our hotel.

3. Day – Friday July 7

After breakfast we drive to Thingvalla National Park. It is the national shrine of Iceland, its most historic site, and one of its most beautiful places. The oldest existing parliament in the world called the Althing first met here in 930 AD. It is majestic and one of the most interesting places on earth from the geological point of view. You can stand on the American tectonic plate and look over at the European tectonic plate. This is the only place in the world where it is easy to see it above sea level. From Þingvellir we drive up to the complete desert at the west edge of Langjökull glacier and down to Borgarfjörður in the west with beautiful waterfalls and the largest hot spring in Europe. We continue further west to the Snæfellsnes peninsula where the Snaefellsjokull Glacier reaches 1,446 meters above sea level and is one of the world's best-known glaciers. Many people all over the world claim it to be one of the earth's seven energy centers. On the north site of the peninsula is the picturesque fishing village of Gundarfjörður where we stop for  the night.

4. Day – Saturday July 8

After breakfast we drive back to Reykjavik for sightseeing and transfer to our hotel. Free afternoon for last minute shopping. Overnight in Reykjavik.

5. Day – Sunday 9 July

Transfer to the international airport
