THE EXPRESSION OF AN IDEAL – Architect Jože Plečnik - Ljubljana

Few cities have had the personal seal of a single artist so strongly impressed as Ljubljana, the birthplace of the architect Joze Plecnik (1872-1957). Over three and half decades, he transformed the former provincial town into the capital of the Slovenian nation. He tried with monumentality and beauty to instill a sense of self-confidence in the inhabitants. He developed his own very special language using simplified manneristic and classical elements which were no longer tied to the plain fulfillment of a function but to the expression of an ideal.

Visit includes architects home and atelier and major sites as: the banks of the Ljubljanica and Gradašica Rivers with their bridges (the Shoemaker's Bridge, the famous Three Bridges…), the Križanke Monastery, the junction of Vegova Road with Congress Square, the National and University Library, the Market.

ENTER A FASCINATING UNDERWORLD – Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle

Discover the precious beauty created over millions of years, drop by drop, year after year...

The 20-kilometre-long underworld system is a miracle in itself, but one becomes truly astounded at the look of the mysterious "human fish" (Proteus Anguinus), wondering at the strange form of life preserved in this underground kingdom. The cave is accessible without special equipment, and has a constant temperature of 8 degrees Celsius. Visitors are taken for a tour by a special cave train, accompanied by experienced guides.

Not far away another discovery awaits us, the picturesque PredjamaCastle that hangs dramatically in front of the cave in the middle of a 123 metre cliff - a four storey structure almost arrogant in its simplicity, but unconquered and uncompromising. The home of the 15th century robber baron Erazem.

Inner Carniola is the most typical Dinaric region in Slovenia. Abundant rain and snow fall here but the ground is like a great slab of Gruyere cheese. The “intermittent” Lake Cerknica is one of the most unusual natural phenomena. This periodic lake has baffled people since ancient times, the simple people explained it through the legends and stories, ofen blaming it on the witches living on the highest mountain nearby. In the 17th century it was explained and dimystified by a Slovenian historian and renaissance man J.V. Valvasor.  On the basis of this treatise Valvasor was elected a member of the Royal Society of London. For better understanding this karst phenomena, you will see an interesting model of Cerkniško jezero with simulation of the changes of water level, followed by a multivisional projection that shows the lake conditions in all the seasons of the year. Then explore LakeCerknica the old way by horse and carriage before returning to Ljubljana.

THE CRADLE OF THE »DANCING HORSE« – Tour of Lipica Stud Farm and show of classical ridding school

Today you will experience the beauty and fruits of the Karst. The Karst region is a small limestone plateau stretching south of Nova Gorica to the Škocjan Caves in the Southeast. Near the Italian border is Lipica, the home of the Lipica Stud Farm, founded in 1580 by Charles, Archduke of Vienna. The Lipizzaners, born dark in color and gradually lightening to a brilliant white, are a proud tradition of the region. Trained to perform movements originally designed for warfare, the Lipica horses today entertain audiences with muscular feats such as the “Airs” above the ground.

Idrija sits snugly in a deep basin at the confluence of the Idrijca and Nikova Rivers surrounded by the hills of Idrija and Cerkno. The second oldest mercury mine in the world opened here in 1500. We’ll walk through the Anthony Shaft where miners toiled for almost five centuries to give you a brief feel for what the working conditions were like for the miners of “live silver”. Ladies will enjoy a visit to the bobbin lace exhibit for which the women of Idrija are famous. Idrija is also well known for žlikrofi, which you will taste for lunch in a local restaurant. On the way back, we drive across the hilly forests to Škofja Loka, a thousand-year-old city at the confluence of the Poljanska Sora and Selška Sora Rivers, which was the center of the Loka dominion owned for 830 years by the Bishops of Freising, who placed an indelible stamp on the city. The old city core boasts numerous points of interest from the past, and the LoškaCastle, built before 1202, reigns above the city.

IN THE BOSOM OF THE MOUNTAIN – Kamnik and Kamniška bistrica

The cultural and historical town “in the bosom of the Alps,” Kamnik (Stein in German) competed with Ljubljana and Kranj for economic and cultural dominance throughout the middle ages. But in 17th century the main route was redirected and Kamnik fell into a deep sleep that preserved its tidy and attractive medieval core, with its houses and portals of hewn stone, balconies and arcades. Visit includes Franciscan monastery library from 1627. A rich collection of over 10,000 volumes, ranging from incunabula to books printed before 1799. The collection includes Dalmatin’s translation of the first five books of the Bible. One of the biggest treasures of the Franciscan monastery and the church of St. Jacob is the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher which was designed by the famous Slovene architect Jožef Plečnik.

We drive deeper in the KamniškaBistricaValley to the source of the river. Water springs from among rocks overgrown with moss and then for a short while stops in a small, dammed up pool. Only a few hundred meters away from the source of the river stands the Plečnik manor that was designed for the Yugoslav royal family in 1932. Short walk in this oasis of peace before returning to Ljubljana
